I hate to say it, but Chivas USA is “technically” one of the worst teams in the history of MLS. They have never won the MLS Cup or a Supporters Shield; in fact, they have never made it past the quarterfinals in the playoffs. They also have never advanced past the Round of 16 in the US Open Cup. Their mantle is completely devoid of a trophy of any kind.
I say “technically” though because Chivas has only been around for four years, so one cannot expect them to have a rich history yet. Plus, they are a team on the rise, having won the West in 2007. But, it seems they will always be the “other” team in LA and may spend eternity (assuming the league lasts that long) playing second fiddle to the Gals.
Their coach, Preki (who was an MLS legend), has done a fine job with what he’s been dealt. Brad Guzan has left for greener pastures, but legend Ante Razov (who is MLS’s second all-time goal scorer) is still plugging along. Other Chivas greats include Sacha Kljestan (aka “Special K”), Francisco Mendoza, and Claudio Suarez.
Chivas USA is known as “The Goats”, just like their Mexican doppleganger, Club Deportivo Guadalajara. They also wear the same kits. Both clubs are owned by Jose Vergara, who produced the film Y Tu Mama Tambien, which for my money is one of the best films of this decade. That film won many awards, a feat the Goats have yet to match.
