I was surprised when i learnt that Milan had signed Ghanaian Sulley Muntari on loan from cross town rivals Inter considering his form the past couple of seasons. Muntari who is on international duty with Ghana in the African Cup of Nations, will be with the Rossoneri until the end of the season when his current contract with Inter is set to expire.
Inter acquired Muntari from Portsmouth in 2008 for €14 million but he has never really lived up to his billing leading Inter to loan him to Sunderland. A statement from Milan read:
“AC Milan announces it has acquired Sulley Muntari on a temporary loan,”
Now Muntari is not a bad player (at least when playing for Ghana) however, with countless other options at their disposal, many Milan fans have not welcomed the signing whole heartedly.
If you consider the fact that Milan had the chance of signing Brazilian midfield wizard Ganso from Santos, then you realise just how costly this could prove to be in the long run for Milan. However, the good news is that this is only a temporary signing and i highly doubt whether Milan will move to make it permanent.
And with Merkel, Flamini, Gattuso, Aquilani and Prince Boateng all out injured, it was not a very bad decision. One thing i do like about Muntari is his pace and this will definitely be a huge advantage to a slow Milan side.
It will be fascinating to see how Muntari gels in the squad and with a crunch Champions League fixture against Arsenal coming up in 2 weeks time, Muntari’s addition could not have come at a better time.
