As Roma’s defeat against Juventus on the weekend didn’t only marked Vincezo Montella’s first league defeat since taking over the capital club but it might also be the last game of the season for Giallorossi’s defender, Phelipe Mexes. The French defender reportedly suffered a torn ligament injury on his left knee which possible needs four or five weeks recovery process, meaning that the 28-years-old will be needing some luck to even make the field on Roma’s last match this season.
Losing Mexes would definitely be a big blow for Montella’s team especially in helping the capital club achieving their target on finishing in the Champions League zone by the end of the season. Since the start of the season, the Frenchman has arguably been to most consistent defender that Roma’s had as both Nicolas Burdisso and Juan both have been very poor in protecting the capital club’s goal this season.
Moreover, should the previous rumors stating that Mexes is on his way to join the current Serie A leader, Ac Milan, next summer is true than the match against Juventus would also be the Frenchman’s last game with Roma. However, the confirmation about the transfer speculation hasn’t been confirmed and another twist might actually occurred if the Rossoneri think that the former Auxerre player’s injury would trouble him in the future. Still, with his contract running out in the summer the center back’s move from Olympico might unavoidable even though the club have had a new owner recently.
Surely any news regarding the defender’s future should be known in the next two months and for now, Roma will still be trying to get Mexer recovers as soon as possible because ending the season in a high is a very important thing for the capital club at the moment. With the Frenchman’s absence, Montella will be optioning to re-create Burdisso and Juan partnership that was being set as the Giallorossi’s main defense combo under previous coach, Claudio Ranieri, last season.
