Lionel Messi is on course to equal Barcelon’a all time leading Goal scoring record of 235 set by Cesar Rodriguez during his 16 year stint with the club from 1939-1955.
Messi has scored an impressive 120 plus goals in the past two seasons and no matter how much people may try and hate on him, he is by far the world’s best player at the moment. In fact, i had my doubts as to whether he would win a 3rd consecutive Ballon D’or award but these were erased last night.
In fact, the only other player who can compete with Messi at this point is Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo and even he still remains a long shot to win the world player of the year 2011.
Should Messi win the award next January then he will be only the second player to have won it 3 times consecutively with current president Michel Platini being the other player to hold this honour.
Speaking to France Football, Messi was pleased with his nomination saying it would be nice to win the award again.
“I am well aware of the prestige of this award and it would be a real pleasure to win it again,” Messi said.
“It would give me infinite pride to be considered at the same level as Michel Platini. And bearing in mind that I will be playing football for several more years, I might even be able to surpass him at one point.”
So do you think Messi will win the FIFA Ballon D’or Award this year? I definitely think so. I also think that it is possible for him to equal or even surpass Rodriguez’s record this season.
