Manchester United could only draw at home against Glasgow Rangers, the Scottish Champions. The draw was a disappointing result for the English side, who would have expected to achieve a comfortable victory at Old Trafford. The 0-0 draw leaves Rangers and Manchester United on one point in the group. Valencia, meanwhile won 4-0 in Turkey against Bursaspor. That leaves the Spanish team top of the group with three points. In the next round of fixtures Bursaspor head to Rangers in Scotland whilst Manchester United head to Valencia in Spain. Manchester United will not now be able to countenance a defeat in Spain. If they did they would have only 1 point out of a possible 6 and be facing an early exit from the biggest competition in club football.
During the 0-0 draw at Old Trafford Manchester United failed to find any attacking flow at all and rarely, if indeed ever, tested the Rangers goalkeeper. The closest attempts were from long range by Darren Gibson but they suggested desperation more than fluency. Hernandez and Rooney, in attack, were especially poor although the occasions in which they did find space they were not supported by decent service from the midfield quartet of Antonion Valencia, Ji Sung Park, Darren Fletcher and Darren Gibson. The display was timid all round and fault could not be found with one individual in particular, more so with the team in general.
Unfortunately the night took a sour note towards the end as Antonio Valencia, the Equadorian winger bought for close to £17 million in the summer of 2009, broke his leg. The player is not expected to return to action this season. Of course the fans and all viewers will wish him a speedy recovery from such an unfortunate injury. His injury leaves Manchester United a midfield player light. The club might recall Tom Cleverly from his loan spell at Wigan Athletic, which has only just begun. It is more likely, however, that more will be asked of Nani, Ji Sung Park and Ryan Giggs in the wide position. New signing Bebe, who is capable of playing on the flanks, might also now expect to feature a little more. The Portuguese under 21 international has yet to feature for Manchester United. In fact he has yet to even make an appearance for the reserve side. Gabriel Obertan, the very talented young French winger, might be asked to step up to the first team and offer competition to the more established players. Although there is little doubt about Obertan’s ability there are questions about his consistency.
