2009 La Liga Season Review: Osasuna

Team Overview: Osasuna, founded in 1920, has played the large majority of their history in the top two divisions of Spanish Football.  Osasuna is still searching for their first La Liga title though.  The club’s best finish was fourth place two different times in their history with the most recent being in the 2005/2006 season.  The club has played the last ten years consecutively in the top division.

Best Performers:

F  Walter Pandiani    11 Goals, 2 Assists
M  Javad Nekounam   8 Goals
G  Roberto    1.31 Goals/Game

Highest High: Osasuna’s highest high tops nearly every other squad this year no matter the league.  With two matches left in the season the club needed to win both in order to survive relegation to the Segunda Division.  The team rose to the occasion and defeated Barcelona on the road 1-0 and then went on to beat Real Madrid the next week 2-1.  The wins were two of the biggest upsets of the season.

Lowest Low: Los Rojillos had a laughably bad start to the year.  The club could not manage a win in the first three months of the season and went eleven games before they did achieve a victory.  The three month draught put the club in a terrible hole from the start of the year.  During the cold streak the club also lost seven matches.

Future: Osasuna survived relegation in the most glorified way possible.  It will be hard to tiptoe around such an unlikely situation next season.  The club was solid on defense only giving up forty-seven goals on the year, but the club needs to improve on the road.  The club only won two road games this year.  Look for Los Rojillos to land a steady forward to help aid the offense next season.
