New manager Rafa Benitez is beginning to sweat as Jose Mourinho’s treble winning side from last season looked disappointing in their Champions League debut with a 2-2 result against FC Twente. Benitez’s new club was off to a quick start in Holland though, when Clockwork Oranje star Wesley Sneijder took the early lead for the Serie A champs of last season in the 13th minute.
But the early lead would not last long as Theo Janssen of FC Twente would equalize via the long penalty kick following a hard foul from Walter Samuel on Luuk de Jongfrom outside of the box in the 19th minute. Alberto Diego Milito would do what he does best eleven minutes later by scoring a goal via the header, but unfortunately for Inter the Champions League Forward of the Year last season would do so on the wrong side of the pitch via the own goal. Julio Cesar had no shot of saving the errant ball off of the Golden Boot winner’s head and Inter would need Samuel Eto’o to bail the club out of danger with a goal in the 41st minute to tie the score heading into the half.
But Rafa’s side lacked the memorable form they displayed last season down the stretch of the huge tournament and the club only mustered three shots on target for the duration of the match. The former Liverpool boss is likely feeling the pressure of replacing a legendary coach and besides Wesley Sneijder his Italian side looked mediocre at best in their debut match of the popular tournament.
Inter did put a bit of pressure on the Dutch side during the remaining minutes of the match, but last year’s treble winners failed to secure a win verses a beatable opponent early on in their Champions League campaign this season. On the positive side, they did come up with a point on the road, but Benitez is likely feeling the heat with the frustrating result earlier today.
