Italian league action resumed yesterday after a short break with a couple of interesting results. Inter Milan began the year with a resounding 5-0 hammering of Parma at the San Siro while high flyers Lazio were thrashed 4-0 by Siena.
In what he termed as his best display ever with the club, a visibly happy Claudio Ranieri praised his side for their 5 star performance. The win moves Inter up to 5th in the Serie A standings just a point behind Lazio.
Speaking after the match, Ranieri was quoted as saying that their result could be the one that starts their turn around.
“I think it was the best [performance] of my Inter reign, especially in the first half, we were very careful and we played the game well,” Ranieri said.
“Now we are smiling. You can see that the lads are not finished and they want to straighten out a season which started badly.”
With the Milan derby coming up in a week’s time, Ranieri is feeling very confident about beating their city rivals.
“We are in good condition to face Milan, and the holidays have recharged our batteries,” he said.
That said, the Sneijder rumours just can’t seem to die out. More speculation about the Dutch star’s future arose as he was once again missing from the starting line up.
With Ranieri hinting that Sneijder and Forlan would have to adapt if they want to continue featuring for the Nerazzurri, his sentiments indicates the pairs possible exit.
“Sneijder can’t be one of the two central midfielders in our 4-4-2 because he does not have the attributes [to do so].
“He and Forlan are two of our major players, but they will have to adapt to the mentality of the team in the coming months. I hope that they can both can recover in time for the derby,” he concluded.
More fixtures are on card today with Juventus away to Lecce and leaders Milan away to Atalanta. These should be easy wins for both clubs, however judging by yesterday’s results, nothing is given.
Lecce are bottom in the league with only 9 points and so they should be no real threat for Juve. However, Milan cannot afford to under estimate mid table Atalanta.
A win for the Rossoneri would keep them top of the table and help them prepare for their crunch derby with fierce rivals Inter.
