As Roma’s inconsistency continue to haunt them as they were surprisingly beaten by struggling Fiorentina despite playing in front of their home fans at Olympico.
Francesco Totti tought he secured at least a point for the home team but a late goal from Andrea Lazzarri simply changed the script as Fiorentina continues their fight to avoid relegation.
Coming into the game after a heavy defeat against Juventus, Roma didn’t seem to learn their lesson as they once again started the game poorly, going a goal down from Stevan Jovetic’s header in the second minute. Jovetic almost made things worse for the Giallorossi moments later but the Montenegro international only managed to hit the side netting, giving a heart stopping moment for the home crowd, who are as stunned as their team.
Fiorentina were much more dangerous than Roma, who looked rather disjointed after having to chase the game again so early and didn’t seem able to create much goal scoring chances in the first period. Luis Enrique try to change things around after the break by putting on Fernando Gago and Marquinho in an attempt to strengthen the Giallorossi’s midfield, while adding more creativity for their attacking set up.
The substitution apparently working out well for Enrique as they eventually managed to equalize through Totti, who stuck up a foot and turned in Gago’s shot, which was previously going rather wide. The Roma’s captain intervention completely wrong footed Artur Boruc on Fiorentina’s goal, giving some lifeline for the Giallorossi as they’re still 15 minutes left for them to try and get the winning goal.
However, it was Fiorentina that eventually picked up the all important three points when Lazzarri’s curling shot streamed passed Gianluca Curci, giving no hope for Roma to equalize. Things actually got worse for the home team after that goal as they were down to 10 men after Pablo Osvaldo got himself a marching order after taking things too far with his protest.
