Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored twice to help Milan to a 2-1 win over AS Roma in the Serie A last night. The win moves Milan 7 points over Juventus who are due to host Inter Milan in the Derby d’Italia tonight.
The win comes at a very crucial point for Milan who are preparing to face defending European champions Barcelona in a Champions League quarter final fixture this Wednesday.
Speaking after the match, an elated Ibra was quoted as saying that this was one of his best seasons this far.
“Thank goodness it went well. I think this is the best season of my career. I think my league form has been more than perfect. I feel good physically and mentally and I’ve played almost all the matches. There’s still a month to go and it’s normal to be tired, but I feel good.” he said.
Turning the focus to the Champions League, Milan have a huge advantage over Barcelona. The Rossoneri have never lost a home quarter final tie at this stage of the competition and they will be hoping that that record stays intact when the Catalans come calling on Wednesday.
The only bad news for Allegri is the massive injury list he has to contend with. In fact, one of the club’s shining stars Thiago Silva is the latest player to join Allegri’s list. The Brazilian defender suffered a thigh strain and had to be substituted after only 10 minutes.
When questioned about Wednesday’s encounter, Ibra remain optimistic but was also very cautious about Barcelona.
“Wednesday will be a great game, a tough match. [Barcelona are] the best team in the world and they’re the favourites, but we have nothing to lose – they do,”
Should Milan overcome the Catalans, they will be strong contenders for the title. However, before the May 19th final, they will have to face either Chelsea or Benfica.
