The Team: South Africa will be the other 31 nation’s hospitable host during the upcoming 2010 World Cup. Well, at least we all hope so. Sure, there were fears that this nation would never be ready for the World’s biggest tourney, but – as of the writing of this post – everything seems to be on schedule. As for the nation’s actual soccer squad, they are actually better than many folks think. Although the nation lacks a good pro league, they have some serious players.
The Cream: Speaking of which, let me tell you who our host will trot out as their best players. Aaron Mokoena is arguably the squad’s best player, as he holds down the defense and wears the captain’s armband. Benni McCarthey though certainly holds the title of South Africa’s most exciting star. Although he is a little “up there” in age (32), at least so far as soccer is concerned, I think he will put at least one ball in the back of the net once the games get going.
The Dream: South Africa obviously wants to take advantage of their extremely friendly home venues, and their dream is surely to become the first African nation to hoist the Cup (and the first team from anywhere to ever hoist one in Africa). The team is known to supporters as Bafana Bafana, and if they can win it all, their supporters will certainly go bananas bananas. But, I think they don’t even escape Group A. I put their chances of winning the Cup at 100:1.
