If there was ever a list of over rated players, then Johann Gourcuff would definitely make the cut. The 24 year old former Milan and Bordeaux player was yesterday revealed as the Stade Gerland as a Lyon player after completing his 22 million Euro transfer.
After impressing fans with his silky smooth style of play, the opportunity to join Italian side AC Milan presented itself in 2006. Gourcuff moved from French club Stade Renne to Milan while only 20 years old but he failed to excite at the San Siro forcing him to return to his homeland on loan to Bordeux.
Gourcuff seems to have put that all behind him as he proved to be one of Bordeaux’s best players last season where they narrowly missed out on qualifying for the Champions League.
“I want to thank everyone at Bordeaux,” “They helped me improve as a player. I now want to work hard, progress and win trophies by becoming part of this Lyon team and helping the club achieve its goals. This is a new start and a real challenge.”
Gourcuff is now guaranteed Champions League action as Lyon secured their automatic slot for the group stages after finishing second in Ligue 1. The Champions League Group Stages draw takes place today in Monaco.
Lyon will be hoping that Gourcuff can translate his Bordeaux form to help them lift that league trophy thy last won 2 years ago. With 18 goals in 69 appearances for Bordeaux, Gourcuff may not have the best scoring rate however, it seems like that is a chance Lyon are prepared to take.
