Fiorentina’s Impressive Impressive Start To The Season Gets Better

Fiorentina are having their best start to a season in quite a long time. After last night’s Champions League  Group E 1-0 win over  Olympique Lyonnais of France, the Viola have booked their place in the knock-out stages of Europe’s premier event.

Fiorentina who are currently in 6th place in the Serie A table have been playing some good football this season and it is mostly in part due to their young strikers Alberto Gilardino and Stefan Jovetic. This good display continued yesterday during their match as they hit the post twice in as many minutes before finally scoring the all important goal in the 28th minute courtesy of a Juan Vargas penalty.

This is the second time that Fiorentina are progressing to the knock-out stage since the turn of the century. Their last appearance was in the 1999/2000 season. Cesare Prandelli has really turned the Tuscan sides fortune since taking over in 2005. He has built a wining formula around the likes of Gilardino, Mutu, Vargas and Jovetic.

Fiorentina are  strong contenders to finish this season in the top four bracket if there current form is anything to go by. Next Sunday they travel to the north of the country – Milan to face off with the current champions Inter Milan. With both teams coming off different results from match day 6, this will definitely be a match to watch.
