Egypt Make It to Quarters

The Pharaohs of Egypt made it through to the Quarter finals of the Africa Cup of Nations after beating Mozambique 2-0 yesterday night in Benguela. The mambas of Mozambique frustrated Egypt throughout the first 45 minutes to ensure that they went into the break without conceding. In my opinion, Mozambique looked the more dangerous of the two sides.

Fumo their speedy winger seemed to be a handful for Egypt as he had more than one chance to open the scoring for Mozambique. This was third meeting between these two teams their last one coming 12 years ago. In their previous 2 games, Egypt beat Mozambique 2-0  and it looked like a case of de javu when Gedo Egypt’s super sub came off the bench to score  the winner with just 10 minutes remaining on the clock.

Gedo who in their previous match against Nigeria scored after coming off the bench, gave Hasan Sheata, Egypt’s coach a sigh of relief when he grabbed the all important goal towards the end of the game. In the early kick-off, Nigeria beat Benin 1-0 thanks to their Everton Striker Yakubu. The Super Eagles were very lucky not to lose this match as Benin twice hit the woodwork after producing some good football.

Egypt have now qualified for the Quarters and their next opponents might be the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon. That is if they fail to finish in top spot in Group D. After losing 1-0 to Gabon, Cameroon have an uphill battle when they face Zambia tonight. A draw won’t help as the Lions will virtually be out of the tournament. Paul Le Guen has his work cut out for him tonight. My predictions for this game, a 2-0 win in favour of the Lions.
