Didier Drogba was last night named Africa’s finest player for the year 2009 in a lavish gala award ceremony in Accra, Ghana. This ends his long wait to be recognised as one of the continents great’s. It was rather obvious that Drogba would carry the day considering the superb form that he is displaying for both his club and country.
Also awarded on the night was Ghana’s u-20 world cup winning captain Dominic Adiyiah. Adiyiah who was the tournaments top scorer was awarded the young player of the year award. The Milan forward is definitely a player to watch out for as he seeks to follow in the footsteps of some of the continent’s greats like Eto’o, Essien and Drogba.
Drogba’s award comes with a huge amount of pressure. The Chelsea foward will be captaining his nation nicknamed the Elephants at the summer world cup in South Africa and he will be expected to make up for their distratous Africa Cup of Nations tournament performance. That said, Drogba can now bask in the glory of this prestigious award for the rest of the year.
