Drogba Goal Leads Chelsea To Victory Over Barcelona

Barcelona got a taste of defeat for the first time in over 12 matches when they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last night. A 47th minute Didier Drogba goal was enough to see out a Barcelona side that failed to capitalise on the many opportunities they created.

Of course, the tie is far from over, however, the win does put pressure on Barcelona who have to win by 2 goals or more and avoid a draw of any kind to make it to their 4th final in the 3 years.

After struggling against their Spanish opponents in past fixtures the win was a breath of fresh air to an aging Chelsea side that are looking to win their maiden European title.

Speaking to reporters after the match, Chelsea captain John Terry hailed his side’s performance singling out Ivorian striker Didier Drogba as the player who made all the difference.

“We had to be very patient, I don’t think we touched the ball for the first 15 minutes but from Didi on his own up front, the midfield and defence, it was a great team performance,” he said.

“Didi is all about these big nights, the big occasions,”

“He put fear into the Spurs defence at the weekend and he did that again tonight. He was up there on his own against some of best defenders in world and he did it brilliantly.” he concluded.

Barca’s loss complicates things for them ahead of  their crucial La Liga fixture against Real Madrid on Saturday. The Catalans find themselves 4 points behind Madrid in the table standings with 5 matches left to play. A win for them would keep their title hopes alive at least for another week.

Chelsea on the other hand won’t have it any easier as they prepare to travel North of London to face Arsenal in match that could help them secure that elusive 4th and final Champions League qualifying spot. With 4 games left to play, Chelsea cannot afford to make any slip ups.

The return leg of this fixture will be played at the Nou Camp next Tuesday.
