The once maligned (see Manchester United) Uruguayan striker paces Atletico Madrid with six league goals. He has been a productive member of the club since his arrival in 2007 via Villarreal.
Forlan has noted that Atletico’s match against Racing Santander begins the club march to a top-four league spot. The club wants to achieve this goal by January.
He noted to the media, “There is a significant points gap with the teams at the top, but we are going to do all we can to reduce that.”
He continued, “Our aim is to be back in the Champions League qualification places by the mid-season break.”
The club only has four matches left to make up the six-point gap between Atletico and the current fourth-place side which is Valencia.
While the club has struggled to meet La Liga expectations, Atletico has already clinched a spot in the final 16 of the UEFA Champions League.
The Uruguayan forward added when speaking with the media, “What we have to do now is concentrate on the league, and worry about the Marseille game nearer the time.”
He ended his thoughts with, “I don’t know why we are doing better in the Champions League, but whether we win or lose, we are always obliged to work hard and put in the same effort, whoever we play.”
