Earlier today, La Liga Tickets reported that Atletico Madrid forward Diego Forlan had set his sights on the 2009-10 UEFA Champions League. In order to qualify for next year’s Champions League, Atletico would have to finish at least fourth in the final La Liga standings. The Spanish outfit is currently chasing the likes of Barcelona, Villarreal, Valencia, and Real Madrid for one of the four Champions League spots.
With Atletico’s victory tonight over Racing Santander by a score of 4-1, the club closed the gap between it and the fifth-place side Sevilla. Atletico currently sits three points behind Sevilla and five points Real Madrid.
Diego Forlan finished off Santander with two late goals. They came three minutes apart with the first in the 78th and the second in the 81st minute. Forlan’s only error on the day was a late chance that nearly gave the Uruguayan the hat-trick. Simão and Sergio Leonel Aguero also scored for Atletico. Atletico ended with 10 shots, six of which that were on goal.
Mohamed Tchite scored the lone goal for Racing Santander on a penalty kick in the 7th minute. The club sits 13th in the La Liga table with 15 points. Racing ended with 15 shots, two of which that were on goal.
