In a match that Sevilla could have easily taken, considering the fact that Real Madrid was short a man in the second-half, they failed to take advantage of their opportunities and were punished by Angel Di Maria. Although Los Nervionenses continued to try and create chances throughout the match, Madrid did well to hold off the visitors and keep them score-less.
Although Sevilla was definitely the better side, Jose Moruinho was determined to try and get the momentum rolling as he decided to try and take out the ineffective Karim Benzema. Unfortunately his plan back-fired as shortly after taking off the French striker, Portugese defender Ricardo Carvalho, was shown a red-card leaving Los Blanco’s down a man.
A definite boost for Sevilla’s attacking game, missed chances came back to haunt them as Angel Di Maria punished the visiting rivals and giving Madrid the 1-0 victory.
It was a tough match to swallow for Sevilla as they looked destined to hand Mourinho his first loss at the Santiago Bernabeu. However, Mourinho and his boy’s were able to extend the streak to 9 as they continue their tight race for first place with Barcelona.
As for Karim Benzema, he could not have had a worse performance. Although he has definitely been playing much better and finding his form again, the former Lyon star was absolutely dreadful for Madrid.
