Despite Cristiano Ronaldo’s impressive form which is seeing him lead the top scorer’s list in the Spanish La Liga, it is looking very likely that Messi will win the FIFA Ballon d’Or for a 3rd consecutive year when the gala takes places on Monday.
Ronaldo’s muted celebrations against Granada yesterday are fueling a lot of rumours that the Portuguese star could be on the verge of a break down especially with the constant comparisons to Barcelona star Lionel Messi.
Truth be said, you really have to feel sorry for Ronaldo. Not only is he leading the top scorer standings, but since his record $131 million move from Manchester United in the summer of 2009, the 26 year old has created one of the most amazing club personal and club record for Real.
Ronaldo has scored 87 goals in 80 appearances for Madrid and should he continue like this, there is no telling where he will be in the next 3 years. His goals scoring feat has seen him become the first ever player in Spanish top flight football to score more than 40 goals in one season.
Of course Messi’s records cannot be overlooked. The 24 year old has scored an impressive 136 goals in 193 appearances for Barcelona since joining the first team in 2004 in addition to becoming the club’s second highest goal scorer after scoring two goals against BATE Borisov in the Champions League.
In fact, both Ronaldo and Jose Mourinho have confirmed that they will not be attending the FIFA Ballon d’Or gala this Monday and according to the club their reasons are because they will be too busy focusing on the Copa Del Rey fixture against Malaga on Tuesday night.
Many think that Ronaldo just can’t bear seeing Messi win the award for a third time.
Turning back to yesterday’s game, Sergio Ramos has defended Ronaldo saying that Ronaldo is ‘fine’.
“Cristiano is fine, we’re happy with him,” Ramos said.
Not quite an explanation if you ask me. It would not surprise me if Messi won the award, however, what would is if Ronaldo comes in in 3rd place. And i have a strong feeling this could happen.
