After Francesco Totti’s second-half goal put Roma up in front of promoted side Bologna Football Club 1909, Roma supporters relaxed as they waited for the end result which certainly looked like a given three points. Sadly, disaster came in the form of the Brazilian right back’s injury-time own goal in the final moments of play. Cicinho attempted to clear but instead headed directly into his keeper’s net.
Roma manager Luciano Spalletti noted to the media, “We could have won but unfortunately we conceded an own goal and we have to accept it.”
Roma was attempting to begin a new winning streak after the important victory midweek against Chelsea FC in Champions League play.
Roma sits 17th in the Serie A table and have won twice out of ten matches in 2008-2009.
The Italian club next plays city rivals Lazio.
In other Serie A action, Torino surprised Palermo 1-0 after a late goal from Austrian forward Jürgen Säumel. The 24-year-old had been linked with a move to England this summer. After several speculative offers, he decided to sign with Torino in July of 2008. Säumel competed for his home country as Austria hosted Euro 2008 this past summer.
