Chiellini Rumored To Be Extended Through 2014

Juventus center back Giorgio Chiellini is expected to sign a two year extension with the club in the next few weeks and the Italian national team star currently has a contract for two more seasons that ends in 2012. That means the pending two year extension would put Chiellini under contract until 2014 and remove many teams from potentially trying to buyout the standout defender’s current contract.

Chiellini, who joined the club in 2005 from Fiorentina, is widely considered the best Italian-born defender in the league and the twenty-six year old has already won the Serie A Defender of the Year award twice including being awarded the honor just last year. Of the Italian younger generation of players Chiellini is arguably the best and the Juventus man is one of the most coveted young center backs in the game today.

The club’s website left the following statement about Chiellini’s potential new deal:

The club executives met with Giorgio Chiellini. The two sides are very close to reaching an agreement for a contract renewal. The details of the deal will be revealed in a few weeks’ time.

And guaranteeing the extension of Chiellini is huge for a side that has lacked the dominant defensive performances at times in the last few seasons. If Juventus wants to be a regular top four club then Chiellini needs to remain. And it appears that for the next four years the defender will be the high impact defender Juventus needs.

It’s a big day for Juventus and a very sad day for many other ambitiuos squads. But good for the young Italian for remaining commited to his domestic league.
