Europe’s premier footballing competition the Champions League resumes today with fixtures that could mark the end of the journey for 16 teams. All teams will be left with one group match after this round of fixtures however, many will not want to take any chances on their qualification to the next round.
Today’s fixtures include:
CSKA Moscow v Lille
Trabzonspor v Inter Milan
Otelul Gulati v Basel
Man U nited v Benfica
Real Madrid v Dynamo Zagreb
Lyon v Ajax
Group A is where much attention will be as all three teams Bayern Munich, Man City and Napoli all have a chance to make it through to the knockout stage. German champions Bayern lead the group with 10 points 3 ahead of second place City.
The Bavarians will not be taking any chances especially after their 1-0 home loss to Dortmund on Saturday. Meanwhile Debutants Man City will travel to Naples to face off with Napoli . A win for either side could assure them of their progression to the next round.
Group B leaders Inter Milan will be looking to extend their lead over Trabzonspor and CSKA Moscow who both have 5 points when they travel to Turkey to face the home side Trabzonspor.
Anything less than a win could seriously dent Inter’s chances of making it to the next round. Another very tight Group is Group C. 2008 Champions Manchester United are joint leaders with Benfica on 8 points and the 2 square off at the Old Trafford in a match will not be short of excitement.
Outsiders Basel have a chance of making it through to the next round if they beat minnows Otelul and either Man United or Benfica stumble. The Swiss club have 5 points while lowly Otelul are yet to record any positive result so far.
Group D sees Real Madrid who have already qualified take on Dinamo Zagreb while Ajax who have a good shot at moving into the next round face off with Lyon. A win for the French side would bring them level on 7 points with Ajax and ensure qualification from the group went to down to the last matchday.
