Napoli’s fun experience in the Champions League this season left a memorable mark in the heart of their players, including Edinson Cavani, who is so keen in grabbing the third place spot by end of season.
The Uruguayan striker admitted that he and his teammates are looking to feel the excitement again, believing that should they managed to play in that top European competition one more time, they will be much better.
In order to make their third place hunt easier, Napoli must get maximum points in their remaining league games, including picking up all possible points this weekend against Juventus in Turin. Cavani himself revealed that they really will give their all against Juve this weekend since it’s pretty much the only way they can steal the third place spot which is currently owned by Lazio.
“We respect the Bianconeri a lot, but our goal is to secure third place. The Champions League was a unique experience and we want to contest in it again. It would be great and this time we will be even more prepared and clever, as [Coach Walter] Mazzarri says, as the true creator of our results. He has managed the group perfectly,” Cavani said.
Despite his strong intention in experiencing Champions League football again, Cavani revealed that should Napoli failed to get it this season, that doesn’t mean he will be leaving the club for a bigger team. The Uruguayan international claimed that his future with the Partenopei does not really depends on whether the club managed to reach that target or not as at the moment he is solely focus in reaching his height with the Southern Italian based outfit.
“It does not depend at all on qualifying for the Champions League or not. I do not think about it, I will only say that I am happy here, I’m fine,” the Uruguayan said. “My son was born in this city and the warmth of the people is unique. Sooner or later there will come a time, but for now I’m focused only on Napoli.”
Aside from targeting the final Champions League spot, Cavani also stated that he and his team are also hoping to grab the Copa Italia this season as they will also face Juventus in the upcoming final in Rome. The striker revealed that getting a silverware with the Partenopei would also be a wonderful achievement albeit it’s only a Copa, as that would end the Azzurri’s title drought after quite sometime.
“I’d like to win the Coppa Italia. A trophy in this shirt would be great, but now I repeat that focus is just about the League. We have a target to hit,” Cavani added
