Serie A Week One Review – Ronaldinho Debut Spoiled

Francesco Valiani scored a stunning goal as promoted Bologna beat Milan 2-1 at the San Siro to spoil Ronaldinho’s Serie A debut.

Midfielder Valiani blasted the ball home from outside the box in the 79th minute after Massimo Ambrosini had cancelled out Marco Di Vaio’s goal for Bologna in the first half.

Last year’s runners-up Roma drew 1-1 with Napoli, who had defender Fabiano Santacroce sent off for a second yellow card in the 54th minute.

Juventus also drew 1-1 at Fiorentina in Sunday’s late game, which meant none of Italy’s big four made a winning start, after champions Internazionale were held 1-1 at Sampdoria on Saturday.

Rangers Top Celtic 4-2 and A.C. Milan Is Shocked at the San Siro

Rangers took the first installment of the Glasgow derby on Sunday behind a brace from former Celtic forward Kenny Miller.  New addition Pedro Mendes also scored.  The Portuguese midfielder joined Rangers this summer from Premiership outfit Portsmouth.  31-year-old Gabonese forward Daniel Cousin rounded out Rangers’ score sheet.

Rangers were busy in the end weeks of the transfer period adding a host of players from across the globe.  Among them, Rangers added an American to the roster with the signing of US international Maurice Edu

Serie A Season Preview

They say a week is a long time in football, so just imagine what a difference two years can make.

In 2006, the off-season in Italy was marred by a match-fixing scandal which rocked the national game to its very core, while on the field the Azzuri ruled the globe after lifting the World Cup in Germany.

Two years on and the summer of 2008 could not have been more different.

The three months that have passed since a sublime performance from Zlatan Ibrahimovic handed Internazionale their third consecutive Scudetto on a rain-sodden pitch in Parma have seen a reversal of the situation.

Edu Could See Action This Weekend + Champions League News

Former Toronto FC midfielder Maurice Edu will likely be in the squad for Rangers on Sunday when the club faces rival Celtic in Glasgow.  If Edu arrives in the city on time, manager Walter Smith sees no reason why the US international would not factor into the Old Firm match.  Rangers spent £2.6m on Edu who agreed to a five-year deal.  He recently competed for the United States in a World Cup qualifier against Guatemala.  The 22-year-old also competed in the Olympic tournament in China.

In UEFA Champions League news:

Juventus, Barcelona, and Greek-power Panathinaikos all qualified for the group stage of the tournament.

Is Shevchenko Returning to A.C. Milan?

A.C. Milan’s director Silvano Ramaccioni has stated that the much-maligned striker is on the brink of returning to his former club.  Since leaving A.C. Milan for Premiership side Chelsea in 2006, Andriy Shevchenko has been a major disappointment.  His £30million transfer fee could have been spent elsewhere to bolster The Special One’s squad.  Speaking of The Special One, it will be interesting to see Sheva and Jose on opposite sides of the Milan derby.

For several months, there has been speculation regarding the Ukrainian international’s return to the San Siro, but now Ramaccioni believes his return is imminent in the form of a season-long loan.  He recently stated,
