El Clasico Key To Title

El Clasico In USA 2020

Spain’s ‘El Clasico’ between Real Madrid and Barcelona is already one of the biggest club matches in world football but has added significance this time with champions Real only four points behind leaders Barca.

Real host the Catalans at the Bernabeu on Saturday knowing victory will put them within one point of their arch rivals with four matches left, while Barca can take a huge step towards a first league triumph in three years.

“Winning the Clasico is the key,” former Real midfielder Zinedine Zidane said on Real’s website. “Beating Barcelona would send a signal and create a great chance to be league champions,” he added. “If Real Madrid win everything will be different and the league can have a new frontrunner.”

Real above United again in rich list

Manchester United may be about to reveal record profits – but they still lag behind Real Madrid in the list of the world’s richest clubs. The strength of the euro against the pound has helped Real Madrid maintain their position at the top, despite a 21% increase in revenue for reigning European champions United, according to the Deloitte Football Money League.
Barcelona are third in the list, while Bayern Munich have climbed above Chelsea (fifth) and Arsenal (sixth) to be fourth.

United are due to announce their figures shortly, but Deloitte are predicting the club will reveal revenue of £257million in 2007/08 compared to £210million in the previous 12 months.

Real Madrid Richest Soccer Club in the World

According to the new figures released by the accounting firm Deloitte, Real Madrid remain the richest club in world football as ranked by annual revenues, closely followed byManchester United. Having won the Premier League and Champions League in 2008, United would have overhauled the Spaniards at the top of the Deloitte Football Money League had it not been for the depreciation of the pound.

And were it not for the effects of the fluctuation in the exchange rate, there would be nine English clubs in the top 20 rather than the seven that feature now. It has been suggested that the devaluation of the pound could even affect the ability of the top English clubs to attract the biggest names to the Premier League.

Looking Ahead to La Liga

This upcoming season in Spain promises to be an exciting one with FC Barcelona aiming to dethrone the two-time defending champion’s Real Madrid. Last season Madrid ended up finishing 18 points ahead of third-place Barcelona and the two games this season will go a long way to seeing if the new Barcelona can close the gap.

After the first match at the Camp Nou on Dec. 14 (Buy FC Barcelona – Real Madrid Tickets December 14), the two clubs will meet again at the Bernabeu on May 3 (Buy Real Madrid – FC Barcelona Tickets May 3rd). After the May 3rd game each team will have four more league games to play a pivotal role in this year’s Championship race.

Sneijder Puts Boot Into Ronaldo

Real Madrid star Wesley Sneijder is not impressed by his teams pursuit of Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo. Real are the current La Liga champions and Sneijder doesn’t think that they need Ronaldo.

“To me this Madrid side doesn’t need to make signings. We’ve been very solid and the team has improved. This squad is quite strong and is going to be even better next year.”

And Sneijder claims Real already have a player of similar stature to Ronaldo within their ranks.

European Transfer News

Beleaguered ex-Manchester City striker Georgios Samaras has made a permanent move to SPL side Celtic.  The 23-year-old Greek international joined City for £6million in January 2006 yet failed to find his niche with the Premiership club.

Also from the Manchester City front, boss Mark Hughes will move his attention toward acquiring several more players to bolster the squad now that the tabled £25.5million offer for Barcelona playmaker Ronaldinho looks unlikely to be accepted.

In Serie A news, Juventus has signed Danish midfielder Christian Poulsen from Sevilla to a four-year contract.  The transfer cost the Italian club £7.8million.

Top 5 Pre-Season Games

Pre-season is Europe is right on top of us and I was thinking today that if I had an unlimited budget what pre-season friendlies would I want to see. These are the five that I came up with.

August 1st – Celtic – Tottenham Hotspur – Port of Rotterdam Tournament. Anytime it is an England vs Scotland match-up the atmosphere is something special even when the game is played in Holland.

August 2nd. Manchester United v RCD Espanyol – Solskjaer Testimonial: Man United first home game since winning the European Cup will make this an extra special event. I am sure the Cup will make its way around Old Trafford. – Solskjaer Testimonial: Manchester United – Espanyol Tickets

European Transfer Questions

On the eve of the transfer period, European clubs begin to maneuver for their primary and secondary targets.  Here are several questions to consider:

1. Will Cristiano Ronaldo stay or will he go?  All signs point to the Manchester United star moving to Real Madrid.  Will the Spanish outfit be able to come up with enough cash to secure the services of the world’s greatest player?

2. Will A.C. Milan, Manchester City, or another club land Barcelona’s Ronaldinho? Argentine superstar and fellow teammate Lionel Messi wants the Brazilian to remain with the Catalan outfit, but it looks like Ronaldinho is moving on.
