FIFA About To Get Sued As They Unilaterally Extend Player Contracts

FIFA have announced contracts will be extended and transfer windows shift in line with the changing fixture list after the COVID-19 crisis. A decison that is sure to be met with lawsuits as FIFA does not have the power to unilaterally extend player contracts.

Nobody knows when the current season will resume, or even if it will resume, so FIFA have taken the step of guaranteeing some elements that were up for debate.

Specifically, that allows player contracts to be extended beyond June 30 to the natural end of the season, and moves the transfer windows to an appropriate time for the clubs and players in this new reality.

UEFA Draw Line In Sand When All Seasons Must End

UEFA

UEFA President Aleksandar Ceferin admits the idea of Champions League and Europa League play-offs are “an option,” but either way all leagues “must finish by August 3.”

All football has been suspended in Europe’s major leagues due to the coronavirus pandemic and it’s not clear when, or indeed if, the campaign will be concluded.

What we do now have is a deadline, set by Ceferin during an interview with German television station ZDF.

“It must finish by August 3, both the Champions and Europa League. It is an extraordinary situation we are in, so we are flexible on dates and kick-off times. If the crisis eases earlier, then we can start sooner.”

Barcelona Players Take 70 Per Cent Wage Cut

Barcelona and Lionel Messi have confirmed their first-team squad have accepted a wage cut of over 70% due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The statements confirm that the players accepting the cut will allow the club’s non-sporting staff – on significantly lower salaries – not to have any salary reduction enforced upon them.

The first statement came from Argentine star Messi on Monday morning on his Instagram account, claiming that the players would always act with the best interests of the club at heart – and took a thinly-veiled aim at sources within the club who had suggested this would not be the case.

Zidane Wants To Clean Out Dressing Room This Summer

Zinedine Zidane is looking to sell five of his Real Madrid stars in order to lay the foundations for another spree of signings as Madrid look to ring the changes this summer.

According to AS, Zidane has been told in no uncertain terms that he must sell before he buys, meaning that the Frenchman will attempt to offload some of his outcasts in order to fund big money moves.

It spells what could be the end for Gareth Bale, James Rodriguez and Lucas Vasquez, who have teetered on the outskirts of the Los Blancos squad for large spells of this season.

Liverpool Has Most Valuable Squad In Europe

Liverpool World Champions

The research group CIES Football Observatory have just released its most valuable squads in the transfer market from Europe’s top-five leagues, and it is the current European and World Champions who now sit top the pile.

The Liverpool squad is now worth a whopping €1.4 billion (£1.27 billion), which puts them ahead of every other club on the continent. Second is Premier League rival Manchester City at €1.36b.

Spanish giants Barcelona (€1.17b) and Real Madrid (€1.1b) are third and fourth respectively, with Chelsea shockingly in fifth place (€1.08b) despite having been banned from signing players in last summer’s transfer window.

Simeone: “Oblak Is The Messi Of Goalkeepers”

Jan Oblak Atletico Madrid

Diego Simeone compared Jan Oblak to Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi after the goalkeeper’s exploits helped Atletico Madrid eliminate Champions League holders Liverpool.

Oblak produced a man-of-the-match display with a number of important saves in Atletico’s stunning 3-2 extra-time victory over Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday.

Liverpool were on top for much of the last-16 second leg – having 34 shots on goal – but they could not move clear of Atletico or get the better of Oblak as the visitors secured a 4-2 aggregate triumph thanks to Marcos Llorente’s brace and Alvaro Morata’s late strike.

Bad Loser Klopp Hits Out At Atletico After Defeat

Champions League Trophy

Jurgen Klopp believes Atletico Madrid should play “proper football” instead of relying on counterattacks after they eliminated his Liverpool team from the Champions League on Wednesday.

Diego Simeone’s team beat the Reds 3-2 after extra time in the second leg of their last-16 tie at Anfield, sending the defending European champions crashing out of the competition.

Georginio Wijnaldum’s first half strike took the game into extra time and Roberto Firmino put the European champions in the driving seat just four minutes in.

But Atletico recovered thanks to a Marcos Llorente double and a late goal from Alvaro Morata to make it 4-2 on aggregate.
