Inter Milan managed to shrug aside the mini crisis the had in Serie A and secure their place in the knocked out stage of the Champions League after grabbing a narrow 1-0 victory against Dutch champion, Fc Twente, at San Siro.
The currently under fire coach, Rafael Benitez, should probably embrace the contribution of Esteban Cambiasso, who scored the only goal of the game that pretty much temporary saved the Spaniard’s coaching career at Inter.
Aiming to secure their place in the next round and also wipe out the recent bad domestic results they had, Inter started the match in the attacking mode as they forced the away team to spent most of of their time defending. However, with a rather low self-confidence that Inter players had, breaking through the Twente’s back line wasn’t actually an easy ride for the home team as they were also in danger of getting caught in the break.
After a rather disappointing first half, the Nerazzurri tried to double their effort in the second period as Wesley Sneijder, Samuel Eto’o and even Jonathan Biabiany kept on working hard to create something up front for the Italian giant. After a very hard fought effort, Inter finally get their goal from a rather unlikely sources as it was Cambiasso who get his name in the score sheet after capitalizing on a messy scrimmage at Twente’s penalty box.
The goal lift up the home side’s confidence even more as after a rather scrappy performance earlier on, they finally started to mounted a much better attacking play although they didn’t managed to get the second one. The Nerazzurri’s wastefulness almost cost them dearly as in the last 15 minutes, Twente also managed to create some good goal scoring chances especially from Deny Landzaat’s shot that hit the bar.
Although being earned with a rather fortunate effort, the narrow victory means a lot for Benitez’s side as at least they can pretty much ends their awful recent run of form and hope that aside from getting a ticket for the next round, the win could be their turning point. Moreover, for the coach the victory should at least kept his seat at Inter bench for a while, at least until Massimo Moratti thinks that the team can’t improve under the former Liverpool coach.
