Blinded Gattuso Resumes Training With Milan

You are probably as shocked as i am to be reading that headline but it is true nonetheless. AC Milan midfielder Gennaro Gattuso resumed training with his colleagues yesterday for the first time since he suffered a career threatening eye injury last September.

Gattuso has not played since September 9th 2011 when he suffered a sixth nerve palsy after colliding with fellow team mate Alessandro Nesta during  a league match against Lazio.

The injury though not considered serious at first was later diagnosed as sixth  nerve palsy a condition associated with the dysfunction of the cranial nerve that controls eye movement. The injury has left him blind in the left eye

A statement from the club’s official website reads:

“After two days off the Milan players were back in training today at Milanello at 3pm. With 13 players missing it wasn’t the usual training session, although there was one piece of good news.

“Rino Gattuso, whose health has been steadily improving, joined the rest of his team-mates for the session.”

At 34 and blinded in his left eye, Gattuso’s career could very well been coming to a pre-mature end. There still is no official word on when the Milan faithful can expect to see Rino in action, but taking all factors into consideration, fans should expect a comeback no earlier than next season.

There was also more good news for the club as Mathieu Flamini also joined his team mates for the training session. Flamini has not featured for the Rossoneri since the pre-season when he suffered knee ligament damage however, after their is a lot of optimism in the team camp that he could make a surprise appearance for Milan against Palermo this weekend.

Meanwhile in other Milan news, defender Thiago Silva has revealed that it would be very hard to turn down a move to Barcelona if the opportunity presented itself.

Speaking to news agents prior to last night’s 2-1 friendly over Bosnia-Hezergovina, Silva said that it would be a ‘dream to wear the Barcelona shirt’.

“It is the dream of every player to wear the shirt of Barcelona.

“I’m aware [of the rumours] through the media and friends, who tell me that Barcelona is interested in me.

“But I’ll leave it to my agent. For now, I’m just thinking of Milan and returning there to win titles.”

Of course such statements could send the transfer market into a frenzy with top club especially the more wealthy ones competing to land his signature.
