Karim Benzema is staying at Real Madrid, according to his agent Karim Djaziri. The French striker, purchased from Lyon in the summer of 2009, has been regularly linked with a number of big European clubs in the past few months. Manchester United, Liverpool and Juventus have frequently been linked with him. Karim Djaziri, however, has today insisted that no deal is in place with any of these clubs. Benzema’s agent has insisted that the player will stay with Los Blancos for the foreseeable future.
Jose Mourinho, the Real Madrid manager, does not appear, at least not publicly, overly impressed by Karim Benzema and has already insisted that the attacker has to help out more defensively. On Saturday evening against Osasuna at the Santiago Bernabeu Karim Benzema did start the match but he played on the right hand side of an attacking trio. Cristiano Ronaldo occupied a roaming position on the left and Gonzalo Higuain was the focal point in the centre. The trio hardly caused a stir and were, to a man, disappointing. A lacklustre performance was saved thanks to a Ricardo Carvalho goal which gave Real Madrid a victory but neither the Real Madrid fans or football analysts were impressed.
Benzema struggled to involve himself in the match, his highlight was a couple of speculative crosses into the penalty area. Benzema’s performance on the right hand side of the attacking trio was, therefore, altogether unspectacular but it appears that Jose Mourinho has this position in mind for the young talented attacker. Interestingly Samuel Etoo occupied a similar position for Internazionale last season on their way to a treble. Jose Mourinho was routinely applauded for converting Samuel Etoo, previously one of the best strikers in Europe, into a well disciplined right sided attacking forward to the benefit of the team. At the end of the current season Mourinho will be hoping the same can be said concerning his influence on Benzema and Real Madrid.
