The Bundesliga title race keeps getting more interesting each week. Yesterday, the chasing pack of Schalke and Borussia Mochengladbach who were just a point behind leaders Bayern heading into this weekend’s games were both held to draws that saw them lose ground in the title race.
However, the shock result of the weekend was Bayern’s 1-1 home draw with Hamburg. The result sees Dortmund pip them to 1st place after a 2-0 win over Nurnberg.
Speaking after the match, an unhappy Heynckes expressed displeasure with the result.
“In the first half we played well, but Bayern’s targets are a bit bigger, so we cannot be satisfied, it’s quite clear,” Heynckes said.
“We had to win here, even by force if need be.”
After yesterdays round of matches, here is how the Bundesliga table looks like:
Dortmund lead on 43 points, Bayern are second on 41 points, Schalke are third on 41 points and Mochengladbach are fourth on 40 points.
It will be interesting to watch what happens when Mochengladbach and Schalke meet next weekend at the Borussia-Park. Though Heynckes was upset with the result, he chose not to throw accusations on his players.
Of course, Bayern’s chances of walking away with silverware this season are not too high both at home and in Europe. The Bavaians will face Swiss side FC Zurich in the knockout stages of the Champions League in the next 10 days and though they should not be too tough an opponent for them, it will be hard for them to go all the way especially with the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Chelsea and Arsenal all in the running.
“I don’t want to throw accusations at the troops,” Heynckes continued.
“Despite everything, we played well in the first half.
“Because the demands of Bayern Munich are somewhat greater, we can’t be happy, that is clear.
