Barca, Milan Win To Maintain Pressure On Leaders

Barcelona continued their pursuit for a 22nd La Liga title yesterday by thrashing Getafe 4-0 at the Nou Camp to move within one point of leaders Real Madrid. A double from Alexis Sanchez and goals from Messi and Rodriguez helped the Catalans to their second consecutive 4 goal win.

The win was made better by the news of defender Eric Abidal’s successful liver transplant. Speaking after the match, Barca coach Pep Guardiola dedicated his sides victory to the 32 year old Frenchman.

“I would like to dedicate this victory to Abidal and his cousin, Gerard [who acted as a donor],” Guardiola said.

“This was a special day for us. We have to be prudent and wait for the next few days.We will see how he recovers next week. We are very thankful to the doctors and we have faith that he will keep going forward because he is a strong lad.”

Focus now turns to Real Madrid who face local rivals Atletico Madrid tonight in a match that could decide the title race. Real have seen their once unassailable 10 point lead cut down to just 3 following a series of surprising draws with the highlight being their barren draw against Valencia over the weekend.

The less than impressive results have sent Madrid coach Jose Mourinho into a media silence as he tries to stem his sides free fall before it gets any worse. Sunday’s missed press conference to the number of press meeting Mourinho has missed since taking over in June 2010 to 43 and there still has been no word from him on today’s fixture.

Meawhile in Italy, AC Milan scraped up a slender 1-0 win over Chievo to return to the top of the Serie A table temporarily. A Sulley Muntari goal was enough to push the Rossoneri 2 points clear of Juventus who host third place Lazio at the Juventus stadium tonight.

Juve remain unbeaten so far in the league this season and a win tonight would keep them on course to win their first league title since 2003.
