Barca Gets Crazy Copa Del Rey Draw

Barcelona came through and won the Copa del Rey last season after a drought and now to defend their title they will need to go through some very murky/shark-infested waters to even get back to the final.  As the draw came out the Catalans found that repeating is MUCH harder than winning.

Standing in their way is Sevilla and Valencia.  Let’s talk out the scenarios that would make this a difficult route for the boys from Barcelona…

Barca will have to meet 2007’s winner Sevilla in the battle to make the final 16 which in and of itself is a disaster waiting to happen.  Imagine the implications of having to play a club that won only a few short years ago (and you’re the club with the bulls-eye on your back.)  If this doesn’t make Sevilla hungry I don’t know what will.  They are near the top of the table in the Premier Division and nothing would put some luster back on their club like knocking Barca out of the tournament.

Then, 2008 winners Valencia (my personally adopted team) will have their own shot at the team that kept THEM from repeating in 2009 if both clubs make it to the Quarters.  Once again, if this doesn’t make Valencia hungry I don’t know what will.  How in the world can you see an opportunity to spoil the “repeat campaign” of the team that spoiled YOUR “repeat campaign” as anything but a goldmine if you win?  I don’t know, but I do know this…Barca got hard teams to play…but they also got hard feelings to fight with too…
