According to most people, Roma is still the only team that can challenge Inter for the scudetto. Sure,Inter are the favourites to defend the Serie A title again, however, Milan, Juventus, Fiorentina, Sampdoria Napoli and Genoa cannot be ruled out.
The Giallorosso threw away their comfortable lead in the dying stages of last season to see rivals Inter pip them to their record breaking 5th straight scudetto. The Romans have been largely quiet in the transfer market with only the signings of a few players and if reports emerging from the capital are to be believed, then Roma fans have reason to smile as their towering striker Julio Baptista has apparently turned down a 14 million Euro transfer to Turkish club Galatasary.
The beast, as he is commonly referred to has struggled to earn a regular starting position ever since he joined Roma 2 years ago. Galatasary on their part have presented a very appealing offer to the Brazilian international.
The club is willing to pay Baptista 3 million Euros per annum plus a bonus of 500,000 every year. Now,for a striker who is struggling just to get some playing time, this is more than a good deal, it is a life saver.
With Adriano joining the Giallorosso, Baptista is likely to fall further down the pecking order. Obviously Baptista will not be playing for the Selecao again and his main objective right now should be to concentrate on his club career, however, passing up an opportunity like this was not such a wise decision.
Staying with Roma does not automatically guarantee him a starting place on the contrary, it increases the competition. Whether Baptista will become regular starter this season is something time can only tell. but one thing is for sure, Roma are not as strong as they think they are.
