The Egyptians had literally declared war on Algeria and they were out to prove that the desert foxes play-off win in Khartoum that sent them through to the world cup finals was a fluke and that they were the better team.
After my team Ivory Coast was knocked out, i decided to root for the only other team capable of winning the trophy – Nigeria. Sad to say though, they too were knocked out yesterday by Ghana in the day’s earlier semi. Now, back to Egypt. The Pharaohs were outstanding in attack from the kick-off whistle.
Their fast counter attacking play led to their first goal in the 39th minute courtesy of a penalty. Abd Rabou converted to give Egypt a 1 goal lead heading into half time. Algeria failed to impress me and i now know why the Egyptians were so bitter in missing out on a world cup slot.
German based striker Mohamed Zidan added the 2nd in the 65th minute while the last 2 goals came in the last 10 minutes of the game. Point to remember though, Algeria finished the match with 8 yes 8 men after they had 3 of their players sent off, 2 for reckless tackles.
Ghana also made it through to the finals after beating an unlucky Nigeria 1-0. Nigeria were their own worst enemies as they had chance after chance to win the game but their strikers could not get the ball into the net. The final we were craving for in 2008 has come 2 years late but there is no doubt that it will still be a highly entertaining match. Both these teams have reached the finals 8 times and they will each want to get the better of the other. So on Sunday the 31st January at 1630hrs GMT, 2 of Africa’s best teams will take to the pitch to fight for the title of champions.
