2010 MLS Preview: Houston Dynamo

The Side: God has already blessed the Houston Dynamo (two MLS Cups in just four seasons), but God bless them again for having cheerleaders. They arouse soccer passion (and other things) in MLS fans. The Dynamo Girls have had much to cheer for lately too, as the Orange had a strong 2009 despite losing offensive maestro DeRo. Now, can the squad cope with the loss of both Ricky Clark and Stu Holden? I’m not so sure. Kinnear has his work cut out for him.

The Pride: Now, the loss of two US stars to overseas teams is bad for Houston (but good for the Nats). Yet, I don’t think they have too much to worry about since they still have a great core of players who play with amazing cohesion on the field. I am talking about offensive stars Brian Ching and Brad Davis and defensive stalwarts Barrett and Boswell. They also have so many vets with heart and desire, like Mullan, Mulrooney, Waibel, and Robinson. They have depth.

The Guide: But do they have enough top talent to win a major trophy in 2010? I think they do. I would never bet against this team because Pat Onstad and Co. are too stingy. Seriously, this team has been going through a defensive dynasty over the last four years that may be unparalleled in the history of the league. I also love Kinnear’s coaching, and his eye for talent. I think the Dynamo have a 12:1 chance of hoisting either the MLS Cup, the US Open Cup or the Supporters Shield.

Houston, we don’t have any problem at all.

Well, so long as you keep the Dynamo Girls!
