Team Overview: Siena finished 14th and stayed afloat in Serie A against daunting odds. Although they never reached the top flight until 2003 (even though they celebrated their 100 year anniversary this year), next season will be their seventh straight season in Serie A. Their all-time best finish was 13th, so this year was a success.

Top Performers: Though Siena’s offense was flat at times, Massimo Maccarone notched 8 goals and Houssine Kharja added 5 goals as well. Goalkeeper Francesco Benussi deserves much of the credit for Siena’s solid season though, as he only ceded 1.13 goals per game this season. He was definitely Siena’s Most Valuable Player.

Highest Highs: Siena had a very good record at home this year, going 9-5-5. They also finished the season strong with two wins in the last two months, a run that secured their spot in Serie A next season. Siena also had a somewhat respectable goal differential (-11) this season. All in all, their supporters must be very pleased.

Lowest Lows: Siena followed their best month of the season, November, with their worst month of the season. In December, Santa brought nothing but coal as the squad fell to Napoli, Palermo, and Inter. In fact, Siena didn’t have a point the whole month. Thus, they went from picking up ten points and looking good – to absolutely horrible.

Future Outlook: Siena’s biggest flaw was their inability to score (0.86 goals per game). Hey, that’s nothing new though; in fact, it’s the same old song. They must acquire some talented forwards. Maccarone is decent, but Siena needs more consistency on offense. Their defense is solid though and will keep them in many matches in 2010.
