2009 Serie A Season Review: Lazio

Team Overview: Lazio, founded in 1900, is a two-time Serie A champion. They are one of the last teams other than the “Big Three” of Juventus, Inter and AC Milan to have won a title in the last few decades. The Biancocelesti have also won five Coppa Italia titles, including one this May when they beat Sampdoria in a hard-fought battle.

Top Performers: Lazio got assistance from “Super Mario” – Mario Zarate, who had 13 goals and 8 assists. Though he had no partner named Luigi, Zarate was teamed with Goran Pandev often, who had a fine season with 9 goals. Finally, Juan Pablo Carrizo was shaky in goal, but he still managed to post a respectable 1.44 GAA.

Highest Highs: Lazio burst out of the gates, winning four of their first five matches. But, their “Highest High” was their amazing Coppa Italia run. They beat many tough opponents, including AS Roma, Juventus (twice), Atalanta, Sampdoria, etc. to win the Cup. Now, they will be in position to defend their coveted title next season.

Lowest Lows: Lazio was glad to win the Coppa Italia because their regular season was pitiful. They lost four of their last five matches and scored only two goals over that span while conceding nine. Sure, they had tough matches down the stretch (Inter, Juventus), but the top clubs consistently finish the season stronger than they did.

Future Outlook: Lazio’s manager resigned in early June because he didn’t feel he had the full support of the organization. Now, Lazio is in an interesting position. As I write this in mid-June, I wonder whether they will seek a “big name” or go with someone within the organization. Either way, they will also need some more defenders.
