I am sure that it is no surprise that Barcelona is winner’s of the 2009 LLTO La Liga’s Best Squad. And why not? Barca has already taken home every other significant trophy this season, so a fourth probably won’t be too much for the squad to handle. The only question to ask now is: Is Barca the best squad ever? I know such a question would ignite a worldwide debate of some of the most legendary squads off all time, but at a minimum Barca must be included on this list.
Barca pulled off one of the rarest seasons in the history of football achieving the remarkable treble (La Liga title, Coppa del Rey, & Champions League winners). The club could not be challenged all season coasting to the best record in Spain basically uncontested. Barca led every statistic you want your team to lead: scoring the most goals with over 100, allowing the fewest with 35, a goal differential of a ridiculous +70, the most wins of any club, and the fewest losses.
Barca not only dominated opponents they won the league title with a month left in the regular season. In the Champions League final they were considered by critics an underdog to Manchester United, but the Spanish squad would embarrass the Red Devils and show the world that they were the best, winning 2-0.
With Eto’o, Messi, and Henry combining for 70 goals Barca was an unstoppable offensive force. Now with Serie A’s best goal scorer, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, joining the squad in a swap for Eto’o, the squad just got that much better.
Congrats Barca! You are the best in the world.
