2009 La Liga Season Review: Tenerife

Team Overview: Founded in 1922, Club Deportivo Tenerife will join La Liga’s Primera Division next season as a promoted club.  Tenrife has played 13 seasons on the top flight with their first ever coming in 1961.  1993/1994 was arguably the club’s best result finishing the year in fifth place and earning a spot in the UEFA Cup.  The club ended the tournament losing to Juventus in the round of 16.  Next season Tenerife will look to battle the best in all of Spanish football.

Top Performers:

F   Juan Francisco Martinez  29 Goals, 6 Assists

M   Alfaro 20 Goals, 1 Assist

G   Sergio Aragoneses  0.84  Goals/Game

Highest Highs: Tenerife shared a joint-lead this season in total wins with 24 and total wins at home with 15.  The club also had the second most firepower of any second-tier club scoring 79 goals on the year.  The club also won a minimum of two matches in every full month of the season this year other then in the first full month of the season, September.

Lowest Lows: Tenerife is another club that was among the league’s best in every significant statistic this season.  The only unfortunate issue that Tenerife faced this season was their last match of the year.  Playing in such a tight race this season, Tenerife had a chance of winning the Segunda Division with a victory in their last competition.  Tenerife lost though and as a result dropped back to third place this season.

Future: Without much Primera Division success in their history, Tenerife will look to improve next season.  Tenerife will be playing against many of the best club’s in the world and surviving relegation will be a difficult thing for the club.  But for now Tenerie should celebrate because they are among the best clubs in all of Spanish football.
