Team Overview: Founded in 1947, Xerez Club Deportivo will play their first season in the Primera Division next year. The club was the best in the Segunda Division this season and earned the title of Segunda League Champions for the first time in their history during the 2008/2009 season. Xerez has been serious second division competitors in the last six or seven years only finishing out of the top ten once in 2008/2009 (they finished 15th). Next year though, Xerez will simply look to survive relegation and double their total amount of years playing in the top tier of Spanish football.
Top Performers:
M Jeronimo Cabrera Momo 17 Goals, 2 Assists
F Perez Antonito 14 Goals, 1 Assist
G Chema 1.00 Goals/Game
Highest Highs: In a tight race this season, Xerez was the best squad in all of the Segunda Division. The Azulinos shared a joint lead for the most wins (including both on the road & at home), the most total points earned (82), and also a near best ranked offense and defense. The club also had a dominating April/May in which they won all eight of their matches.
Lowest Lows: Xerez was the best Segunda Division squad this season, but they won the league by a very narrow margin. It is tough to be critical of a club that is coming off of their best season to date, but Xerez did have a few unspectacular months. The club did have four full months in which they did not win more then a single match. Xerez needs to improve on this if they want to survive La Liga next season.
Future: Xerez is finally considered a top dog, so congrats to the club for proving all the critics wrong and earning their right to the top division. It has been a long road for the club, but next year Xerez will face many tougher challenges then they have ever faced before. Lets hope that the #1 team from 2009 shows up and not the 15th ranked club from the previous year.
