Team Overview: Sevilla Futbol Club, founded in 1905, has only won a single La Liga title in their 104 year history. In 1946 the Rojiblancos were the league’s best club winning the Primera Division title. Now sixty-three years removed from the season, Sevilla is a contender once again. And why not? Sevilla has been one of the best Spanish Cup clubs in the last five years. In 2005/06 the club won the UEFA Cup and in 2006 they won the UEFA Super Cup as well. In 2006/2007 Sevilla was able to repeat as UEFA Cup Champs and also took home the 2007 Copa del Rey.
F Frederic Kanoute 18 Goals, 8 Assists F Luis Fabiano 8 Goals G Andres Palop 1.00 Goals/Game
Highest High: Sevilla conceded only 39 goals this season which is the second best result in the league behind Barcelona. Keeper Andres Palop was critical to the club’s success. Sevilla was also one of the best road teams all season. The club only lost 4 road matches and won 10. Sevilla would rank in 2nd in road wins this season.
Lowest Low: When it rains it pours and this April would be a dark time for Sevilla. The club lost four out of five matches only earning a point for the extended month. Also Sevilla’s defense evaporated during the 30 day span conceding 12 goals for the month. It would be two times more goals then the club would give up any other month.
Future: With huge additions by Real Madrid it will be hard for Sevilla to keep up next year. One key is the defensive side of the pitch. If Sevilla can continue to be among the league’s best D’s then the sky is the limit. Unfortunately, Sevilla is not capable of signing the type of talent that many of their rivals are acquiring, but look for the club to compete anyway next season.
