2009 La Liga Season Review: Malaga

Team Overview: Club Deportivo Malaga was originally founded back in 1904, but the club is still searching for their first La Liga title during the 2009/2010 season.  CD Malaga played their most competitive football between 1950 and 1990.   The club played twenty years in La Liga during the forty year time span including their strongest finish ever of 7th during the 1971-1972 season.

Best Performers:

F Nabil Baha 9 Goals, 7 Assists                                                                                        M Apono 9 Goals 4 Assists                                                                                             G Inaki Goita 1.44 Goals/Game

Highest High: This season would be a special one for Malaga.  It would be the second best finish for the squad in La Liga history ending the year in 8th place.  Malaga was  a strong road club this year finishing with the sixth best record on the road this year.  They also were the most impressive club this October, winning all three of their matches by a total of 7-1.  Malaga looks to continue their success next season.

Lowest Low: CD Malagawas a successful club all year except in the last month of the season.  The club had a dismal May losing three matches, tying one, and winning only one.  The most frustrating part was that all three of the clubs that were victorious all finished worst at the end of the year in the standings.  If Malaga had a stronger finish they might have qualified for the UEFA Cup next season.

Future: Malaga was a surprising club this year and finished the year on the top half of La Liga.  If the club wants to stay on the better side of the league then they will likely need an even better result next year.  Many clubs are making a push this off-season to compete, but for now Malaga is among the league’s best squads.
