2009 La Liga Season Review: Barcelona

Team Overview: Futbol Club Barcelona, founded in 1899, are considered the second most successful club in Spanish football history behind Real MadridBarca has won 19 La Liga titles, a record 25 Spanish Cups, a record 4 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, and 3 UEFA Champions League trophies.  Barcelona has also never been relegated from the top tier of Spanish football and this season was considered the best club not only in La Liga, but the entire world.

Best Performers:

F Samuel Eto’o 30 Goals, 4 Assists                                                                                    M Lionel Messi 23 Goals, 11 Assists                                                                                   G Victor Valdes 0.89 Goals/Game

Highest High: This season Barcelona became the first Spanish club in league history to accomplish the rare treble.  The club is the first to win La Liga, Copa del Rey, and the Champions League all in the same year.  And Barca was by far the best.   The club won the league title by 9 points and scored 22 more goals then any other team while conceding 4 less then the second best defense as well.

Lowest Low: It is hard to pick a lowest low when a club was first place in every significant statistic for the year, won every critical tournament they played in, and was the best club in the entire world, but Barca did get a little bit relaxed at the end of the season.  And rightfully so,  the club had already clinched the league title, but Barca did lose a few matches at the end of the year.  Shame on you Barca.

Future: It seems that Barca will have to compete with Real Madrid next season for La Liga supremacy.  And despite Barca’s inability to match Real Madrid’s signing frenzy this summer, the club is still the number one team in my book.  Barca was so great this year, they still will be the club to beat next season due to their already proven team chemistry.
