2009 La Liga Season Review: Atletico Madrid

Team Overview: Club Atletico de Madrid, founded in 1903, is considered one of the most successful clubs in La Liga Primera Division history having played 71 seasons on the top tier.  The club has won an impressive nine First Division league titles and nine Copa del Rey trophies.  Los colcheneros even achieved the very rare double in 1996.   However the club has not been able to win another significant trophy since the very special double that season.

Best Performers:

F Diego Forlan 32 Goals, 10 Assists                                                                                F Sergio Aquero 17 Goals 9 Assists                                                                                G Leo Franco 1.50 Goals/Game

Highest High:  Atletico Madrid was unstoppable the last month of the season.  The club won all five of their matches by a margin of 13-3.  The run came at the perfect point in the season.  The club was able to secure the last qualifying spot in the UEFA Champions League next year by a two point margin.  Forward Diego Forlan was a force this season, winning the Golden Boot and scoring more goals then any player in any major league.

Lowest Low:  It would be a rough start to 2009 for Atletico Madrid.  The club would struggle from January until early March winning only one match over the eight game period.  The club lost four matches over the time-frame and tied another three while only earning six points over the two month span.  Atletico Madrid would quickly turn it around though winning ten matches in their last three months of the season.

Future:  So far this off season Atletico Madrid has made one significant upgrade.  The club parted ways with keeper Leo Franco and signed young 20 year old Sergio Asenjo from rivals Real Valladolid.  The move will surely help lower that goals per game average and keep Atletico Madrid a serious contender for years to come.
