USA And Argentina End Up 1-1

by David on March 26, 2011

In an absolutely thrilling game, the U.S. and Argentina drew 1-12 tonight in front of a sold of crowd at the New Meadowlands.

For an exhibition game, this game was played with pace, passion and a desire to win by both sides. It was also a game of two half’s.

In the first half Argentina were simply fantastic. Playing a short passing game a la Barcelona, Argentina ripped the America defense to shreds with Messi and Di Maria both brilliant. A combination of poor Argentina finishing and U>S. keeper Tim Howard the only reason for game was still scoreless for the first 40 minutes.

But as half-time approached Argentina finally got the goal their play deserved, and as usual Messi and Di Maria were involved. Messi went on one of his mazy runs and reached the byline where he then played the ball through Bocanegra’s legs into the 6-yard box. Di Maria’s shot was saved by Howard and the rebound fell to Cambiasso, who scored his first international goal in over two years.

Argentina’s first-half performance was breathtaking at times, and the U.S. needed to do something different at half-time to try and get back in the game. And credit Bob Bradley for making two bold moves as he U.S. switched to a more attacking lineup with Agudelo replacing Jones and Chandler coming in at right back replacing Spector.

Tim Howard continued to keep the U.S. in the game, but as the second half progressed, the U.S. started to ask some questions of the Argentina defence.

Then in the 59th minute the U.S. got their goal. Landon Donovan’s free kick was met by Bocanegra. Argentina’s goalkeeper Mariano Andujar could only block the header and the ball fell to 18-year-old Juan Agudelo who knocked it into the net.

All in all a great game. In the first half Argentina showed why they are one of the top two or three national teams in the world. But in the second half, the U.S, showed why they are so hard to beat. They never give in, and time and time again they find a way to get a come from behind goal.

What did you think of the game tonight?

Hopefully Landycakes, Dempsey, Convey, Bunbury, Agudelo and many others will be playing with the USMNT against Argentina. Let’s see if the Stars and Stripes can give the Argies a challenge.

Megan, before you criticize other people’s English, please look at your own. Your “sentence”, if we can call it that, has at least 10 errors in it. See if you can figure out where they are. If you can’t, write back and I’ll tell you.

Flying from Miami to see the game with my kids! We are Cuban-Americans and we love The Argentinian National Futbol Team. We admire our Team USA and they are getting better every year. Donovan, Dempsey, Bocanegra will display their talent. Messi, Macherano, DiMaria, Zenetti will show why Argentinian Soccer is always at the top. Will be a PHENOMENAL GAME!!!

Yes technically the stadium is in New Jersey. But if you are not from the east coast, it is easier to use NY as a reference point than NJ

i have something to say! it’s embarassing to know that we didn’t win the game, i mean usa doesn’t even call the sport by its name, and we are argentina, the team with the best combination of players in the whole world, i’m guessing the result of the match was only because riquelme and carlitos tevez didn’t play and our boys were tired , usa players were much taller than ours and had longer legs, that’s all i’m saying…they also didn’t have much support on the stadium, by the way, usa should get better chantics, those were lame, showed lack of passion!!!

bad sportsmanship March 27, 2011 at 3:56 am

Argentina’s incredibly bad sportsmanship is embarrassing. Argentines are well known for being very arrogant, and it’s no difference here. Instead of giving US well deserved credit for their play and comeback goal, people want to make excuses for Argentina or trash talk the Americans. It’s no wonder all of Latin America roots against Argentina. Argentina is and has been overrated for over 20 years now.

Reply

Stefan March 27, 2011 at 5:28 am

Well I expected Argentina to win, but I also know USA isn’t so bad, they’ve average players (no big stars) but if it’s a team they can get good results. Normally Argentina would’ve beat them but this was a friendly, there was nothing on the line so 1-1 is fine.

I hope the people have enjoyed the game, Messi is the best player in the world and he shows it every game at FC Barcelona. If Argentina can create the same kind of play as Barcelona, they’re in favour to become World Cup winners in Brazil 2014.

Martha Lopez March 27, 2011 at 6:26 am

This is going to be a great fight between USA and Argentina, but I’ll bet for USA! Good luck to them. May the best team win (that’s USA LOL)

Reply

Francesca March 27, 2011 at 7:03 am

Didn’t know that US had a soccer team!

Reply

Bori March 27, 2011 at 10:31 am

You must’ve been living under a rock all along, the US has a Soccer (futbol) team so much so that the US tied Argentina, something that only seemed like a dream years ago has become a reality, GO USA!!!ohh and yes, no excuses for Argentina they may be the better team on paper but obviously weren’t good enough to beat the US yesterday!

Reply

Jack Hollis March 27, 2011 at 11:19 am

Great game. Argentina was the better team on the night, but not better enough to win. That’s football. Great crowd and atmosphere. Good to see so many US fans. Almost 79,000 people in attendance. Just goes to show that people will show up to see top level players like Messi. Messi gave everyone what they came to see, he was spectacular.

All in all, a great game to watch, a great game for the US team and a bit of an embarrassment for Argentina.

USA know how to stop people from scoring in their goal. The US always had excellent goalies, who become beasts when they play for the national team. Too much failure to score will drain attackers. Argentina did everything except put the ball in the net and that is what counts. To beat the US you need skill, power and height upfront.

Reply

erika March 28, 2011 at 1:58 pm

well, you see Argentina didn’t want to embarres USA nor Argentina wanted to give them the pleasure to win. besides USA players were taller then Argentim’s. obviosly the game was so exciting! after all
*anyway nobody can deny that all of USA players became defender when Argentina attack, they were scare that messi would make a goal ! ha!
