My US “Dream Team” For Mexico This Month

I am firing off this post late tonight before Bob Bradley can spoil my fun and let me know who his “dream team” is for Mexico. I wanted to ensure I got mine out first so I could say “I told you so” when his comes out. In all actuality, we will probably both select a lot of the same players for next week’s match with Mexico. But, I have decided to beat him to the punch and let all you STO readers know who I would want on the pitch next week.

Bradley, or “Skeletor” as I like to call him, has taken his time naming his roster for the World Cup qualifier against Mexico, which is now one week from today. Mexico already named their players, so I am admittedly a little antsy to see who Bob will select. I simply cannot wait for him to get around to it though, so I am going to go ahead and name my dream roster for the game. In a few days, we will see how many players Bob and I agree on.

Here are my starters:

Forwards: Jozy Altidore, Clint Dempsey

Mids: DaMarcus Beasley, Sacha Kljestan, Michael Bradley, Landon Donovan

Defenders: Marvell Wynne, Oguchi Onyewu, Carlos Bocanegra, Frankie Hejduk

Goalie: Tim Howard

Bench (7): Brad Guzan, Steve Cherundolo, Heath Pearce, Jose Francisco Torres, Ricardo Clark, Freddy Adu, Brian Ching

Of course, this roster is based on all these gentlemen being healthy and available, which probably won’t be the case. Cherundolo is apparently injured, so I think Michael Parkhurst should take his spot. I also think Bob will want one more “traditional” striker on the bench, though I would rather see Adu in the game over a clunker like Kenny Cooper. Finally, Guzan could stay abroad and a guy like Perkins could ride the pine for 90 minutes instead.

I don’t really see how Bob could find much fault with my starters though. Jozy scored against Mexico last time around and he’s our most exciting player. He also needs some “big game” experience. Dempsey has really cemented himself up top too, though I would actually like to see him switch positions with Landon. In the mid, you know Bob will go with his son, and DMB and LD are our best offensive players as of now.

Special K deserves the nod too. After all, he whupped the Swedes’ butt two weeks ago. Could Clark start? Maybe, but I doubt it. Michael can handle the defensive duties while Kljestan should be allowed to play the role of attacking midfielder. The guy has proven himself now, and we need to ensure he continues to develop that attacking instinct. Let’s just hope Adu gets some garbage time minutes as he needs to be ready for 2010 too.

In the back, Bob will likely agree with me in the middle and go with Gooch and Boca. His outside starters are less likely to be the same as mine though. I love Frankie and I think he brings a ton of experience. I also think Wynne is a rising star. I could see Pearce starting instead of Wynne though, as I know Skeletor loves him. In goal, can there be any doubt it will be (and needs to be) Howard? He’s our best player by far and we need him next week.

What do you think about my lineup? Let me know in the comments.
