Euro 2008: Turkey Defies the Odds Again

In the semi-final match against Germany, it would be wise for Turkey to start the game down 1-0, the team seems to rise up when behind.  Many pundits believed that the most exciting game of the tournament would end up being Turkey’s come-from-behind win against the Czech Republic.  Tonight’s Croatia versus Turkey match can make a case for the tournament’s best as well.  Both teams brought offensive attack after attack towards the opposing team’s goal, and for 119 minutes the defenses of Croatia and Turkey held out.

After Croatia scored in the 119th minute, the match looked all but over until the Turks snatched victory from defeat once again on a strike from forward Semih Şentürk.  The Croatia supporters were left devastated as Turkey won 3-1 on penalties shortly after.

Turkey will be at a huge disadvantage against Germany having to sit star midfielders Tuncay Şanlı and Arda Turan plus defender Emre Aşık due to suspension.  Star forward and captain Nihat Kahveci may also sit due to injury.

Turkey may still prevail.  The team seems to flourish when at a disadvantage.
