Copa del Rey: First Leg of 4th Round Summary

The first leg of the 4th round of the Copa del Rey has been played and out of the 16 matches only one or two truly ended in a shock defeat of a favorite. And last year Real Madrid lost to Alcorcon 4-0 in the first leg, but this year the weaker home teams could not take advantage of the first leg and few upsets look like they will be in the works.

Murcia

0 – 0 Real Madrid

Mourinho claimed his players would be “dead to him” if they lost and good thing for the Special One that they achieved the draw because he can’t replace Ronaldo and Casillas.

Ceuta 0 – 2 Barcelona

Barca would enjoy two early scores from unlikely men in the 15th and 25th minute (Pedro, Maxwell) and the former treble winners remain relevant.

Logrones CF 0 – 3 Valencia

Aduriz’stwo goals in the start of the second half sealed the match for the league’s fourth place squad at the moment.

Real Unión Irun 0 – 4 Sevilla FC

Negredo scored two goals for the usual top four club: one right before the half, the second early in the 2nd half and the club rolled to an impressive win.

Club Polideportivo Ejido 1 – 1 Villarreal

Frustrating draw for the Yellow Submarines considering they gave up one in the 90th minute. Jozy Altidore gets a shout out for scoring though.

Cordoba 2 – 0

Racing Santander

One of the few upsets of the first leg. Congrats to Cordoba who scored one goal in each half.

Hercules 0 – 0

Málaga

The giant slayers of Hercules dropped the ball at home against a strong opponent from last season, but they did beat Barca on the road this year.

Mallorca 3 – 1 Sporting Gijon

Another upset and Cavenaghiwas impressive in the first half with two scores to take the two goal advantage onto the road.

Portugalete 1 – 1 Getafe

Getafe’s Corpa scored early (7th minute) giving the away side hope of a win, but Portugaltee’s Bergara equalized early in the second half.

Valladolid 0 – 2 Espanyol

Espanyol’s brilliant start to the season continues in tournament play with an impressive two goal performance by Vazquez.

Xerez 2 – 3 Levante

This was likely the most entertaining game of the first leg. Xerez up 2-1 withten minutes left gives up their second goal to Stuani for the equalizer and then the winner to Larrea in the 88th minute.

Real Betis 0 – 1 Real Zaragoza

Gabi’s second half goal via the penalty would be the only score in this first leg match

Universidad Las Palmas 0 – 5 Atlético Madrid

Wowzers! Sergio Aguero and the Atletico offense simply dominate the Universidad defense in the week’s most impressive first leg performance.

Alcorcon 0 – 1 Athletic Bilbao

No 4-0 magic this season from Alcorcon andthis year they will have to win 2-0 on the road to assure another 3rd round playoff.

Osasuna 1 – 1 Deportivo La Coruña

Two second half scores left both of these top tier clubs at a draw heading into the second leg.

Real Sociedad 2 – 3
