Chelsea‘s recent winning streak was halted by a 1-1 draw at Wigan Athletic, Jordi Gómez capitalising on a horrible mistake from Petr Čech to equalise two minutes from time.

The Blues were on course for a fourth consecutive Premier League win when Daniel Sturridge collected a long, diagonal ball from Ashley Cole and drilled a shot across Ali Al-Habsi after 59 minutes. Gómez’s late leveller, however, means André Villas-Boas’s third-placed side are six points off the pace ahead of four matches on Sunday, when all of their title rivals are in action.

The Daily Mail is reporting this morning that Chelsea are willing to take as £30m loss on misfiring striker Fernando Torres.

According to Neil Ashton at the Daily Mail, Chelsea have considered sending Torres out on loan to rebuild his confidence, after scoring only three Premier League goals for Chelsea this year.

Chelsea had hoped that the signing Juan Mata this summer would improve Torres’s game, but after some good initial signs at the start of the season, he has been really poor since returning from his suspension.

While Barcelona‘s Clásico win at Real Madrid captured headlines around the world, it was not the only significant result in Europe this weekend.

Spain
The Liga focus fell squarely on the Santiago Bernabéu this weekend as Barcelona injected fresh drama into the title race with a 3-1 comeback win at Madrid. Karim Benzema gave the hosts the lead after just 23 seconds against their arch-rivals, but Alexis Sánchez, Xavi Hernández and Cesc Fàbregas hit back to send the visitors level at the top, although Madrid still have a game in hand over their rivals. Elsewhere, third-place Valencia was stunned at Real Betis Balompié, losing 2-1 to two added-time goals from Rubén Castro. Levante tool advantage of Valencia’s defeat to move within a point of them as they beat Seville 1-0.

Fascinating article in the Sun today about how today about how Andre Villas-Boas laid down the law to his Chelsea players.

Between the defeat to Liverpool in the Carling Cup and the trip to Newcastle, AVB met with Chelsea’s four most senior players: John Terry, Didier Drogba, Frank Lampard and Petr Cech.

It appears that AVB told them it was their jobs as senior players to get the team pulling in the right direction and he expected them to relay that to their team-mates. The four, used to player power at Chelsea pushed back and the conversation started to turn heated according to the Sun before AVB ended the meeting for lunch.

So after an exciting first round in the Champions League, there are a few shocks and surprises as the competition takes a 2 month break. Of course the major shocks are the exiting of Man United, Ajax and Valencia.

Joining that  clubs that had already qualified to the knock out stages are: Lyon, Basel, CSKA Moscow and Napoli. With the likes of United, Valencia, Villarreal, Porto and Ajax out of the tournament, it will be interesting to see whether the traditional European powerhouses will fair any better.

Two goals from Chelsea striker Didier Drogba and a fine solo effort form Brazilian Ramires was enough to send Chelsea through to the knockout stages of the Champions League for the 8th consecutive season.

I must admit, i knew the win was important for Chelsea and Villas-Boas, but i never expected the coach to react the way he did. It was evident that the win was priceless for Villas-Boas and a Chelsea side that had become used to losing.

The Writing is on the wall for Chelsea coach Andre Villas-Boas. Win tomorrow’s match against Valencia and hang on as Chelsea coach for a couple more weeks.  Lose, and either face the sack or quit.

Tomorrow’s match at Stamford Bridge will be crucial in all aspects for he Blues as the fate of their entire season hangs on the result of the match. This has forced iconic striker Didier Drogba to call for his team to come together as they prepare to take on the Spanish side.

Manchester City remain five points clear at the top of the Premier League, while the three big London clubs; Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal, all got important wins.

Man City have a massive Champions League match against Bayern Munich this coming week, and they warmed up for that encounter with a 5-1 thrashing of Norwich City. Sergio Agüero’s clever 32nd-minute poke complemented after the break by Samir Nasri’s free-kick and Yaya Touré’s strike. Steve Morison reduced arrears but substitutes Mario Balotelli and Adam Johnson replied. City remain five points ahead of Man United, who won 1-0 at Aston Villa thanks to a Phil Jones goal.

In football, there are 3 kinds of players; the one’s who are talented and get recognised and rewarded for their performances, the one’s who are not that talented and are lucky most of the time and get recognised for their performances and the one’s who are talented and never get recognised or rewarded at all.

Michael Ballack falls into the last category. The 35 year old German has had an illustrious career with some of Europe’s biggest clubs and as his career comes to an end, a medal that does not hang in his trophy cabinet is one every player dreams of – the champions league medal.

I feel for Chelsea fans who yet again had to endure another loss 2-0 home loss to Liverpool last night. I mean the first loss although hard to accept was a bit understandable, however, suffering a similar loss with an identical scoreline to the same team in less than 2 weeks is simply unacceptable.

Now you won’t even believe what Villas-Boas reasons for last night’s loss are According to Villas-Boas, Chelsea fans are the reason why the team is performing so poorly.

Villas-Boas believes that the anxiety of the homes fans is rubbing off on the players and hence their performances.
